The case remains open, officials said, but no further investigative steps are planned unless additional information comes forward.</p><p>Brittany disappeared on September 3 after failing to return home from school. For days, her name echoed through the woods and along the creeks near Hollow Bend Road as neighbors, family members, and volunteers searched. When her body was found three days later at Coalwater Quarry, the shock rippled far beyond the small stretch of road where she lived.</p><p>In the weeks that followed, the town gathered, at churches, in school gyms, and along the roadside. Parents walked children to bus stops. Porches stayed lit late into the night. For a while, it felt like everyone was holding their breath at the same time.</p><p>For now, winter lingers over the hollow.</p><p>The flowers and stuffed animals left near the Lynn home have faded or been carried away by weather. The yellow ribbons tied to fence posts have thinned. Church services are smaller. The road is quiet again.</p><p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t feel over,&#8221; one neighbor said. &#8220;It just feels&#8230;unfinished.&#8221;</p><p>Authorities say deputies conducted interviews, reviewed tips, and followed every lead available to them. No arrests have been made.</p><p>&#8220;This case is not closed,&#8221; a spokesperson for the Sheriff&#8217;s Office said. &#8220;But at this time, there is nothing further to pursue.&#8221;</p><p>For Brittany&#8217;s family, and for many in Ricochet Hollow, the words land heavily. Mr. Cross stated he had observed what appeared to be a <strong>juvenile hand</strong> near the waterline while fishing and departed the area without approaching the remains further.</p><p>The undersigned deputy accompanied Mr. Cross back to The Slip, arriving at approximately <strong>1000 hours</strong>. Upon arrival, Mr. Cross proceeded on foot ahead of the deputy and directed the undersigned to the specific location where he stated the observation was made.</p><p>The area consists of a steep rock face descending to shallow water with large, irregular stones at the base. From an elevated vantage point identified by Mr. Cross, a portion of a juvenile hand was visible extending into the water between rocks. The remainder of the body was partially submerged and not immediately visible without closer approach.</p><p>Mr. Cross reiterated that he originally observed the hand from several feet away and did not descend to the waterline. Visual inspection of the immediate area did not reveal disturbance consistent with recent foot traffic beyond that of Mr. Cross accompanying the undersigned back to the scene.</p><p>Fishing equipment identified by Mr. Cross as his own was observed staged several yards from the drop area. Mercer, M.D.<br><strong>Location:</strong> Ricochet County Morgue<br><strong>Requested By:</strong> Ricochet Hollow Sheriff&#8217;s Office</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>IDENTIFICATION</strong></h3><p>The body was identified as Brittany Lynn by visual identification and confirmation by family.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>CONDITION OF BODY</strong></h3><p>The body was received clothed and secured in an evidence body bag (see Evidence Log #001). Rigor mortis was present and consistent with a postmortem interval extending beyond 24 hours. Lividity was fixed and observed in dependent areas.</p><p>The body exhibited evidence of water exposure consistent with <strong>submersion following death</strong>.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>EXTERNAL EXAMINATION</strong></h3><p>The body is that of a well-nourished juvenile female.</p><p>Multiple abrasions were observed on exposed areas of the extremities, consistent with contact with rocks or rough surfaces.</p><p>Examination of the neck revealed <strong>faint contusions and patterned discoloration</strong>, most prominent along the anterior and lateral aspects. No ligature furrow or patterned ligature marks were identified.</p><p>Ligature material consisting of clear monofilament fishing line was present, with associated rocks recovered and documented separately by law enforcement. The placement and configuration of the ligature material indicate <strong>postmortem application</strong>.</p><p>No defensive wounds were identified on the hands or forearms.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>INTERNAL EXAMINATION</strong></h3><p>Internal examination of the neck structures revealed <strong>soft tissue hemorrhage in the anterior neck musculature</strong>, consistent with external compressive force.</p><p>Petechial hemorrhages were observed in the conjunctivae and facial tissues.</p><p>The hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages were intact.</p><p>Examination of the lungs revealed <strong>no significant water aspiration</strong>, supporting death prior to submersion.</p><p>There was no evidence of significant natural disease or congenital abnormality.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>ADDITIONAL FINDINGS</strong></h3><p>The examination revealed injuries and findings consistent with nonconsensual activity. Authorities said a community member arrived at the Sheriff&#8217;s Office early that morning to report the discovery after being in the area. Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances.</p><p>Well known to generations of local residents, Coalwater Quarry has been closed since 1982. The site has seen little official use in the years since, though it remains a spot where fishermen cast their lines. In the warmer months, the western end of the quarry serves as an informal recreation area for local swimmers to cool off.</p><p>Throughout Labor Day weekend, neighbors and volunteers searched woods, fields, and creek banks closer to the Lynn home, holding onto hope that the first-grade student had wandered and might yet be found safe. Much of the organized search effort had been focused in the immediate area around Hollow Bend Road.</p><p>&#8220;This is a hard day for our town,&#8221; Sheriff Robert Hale said Monday. &#8220;We ask everyone to keep the Lynn family in their prayers and allow investigators the time they need.&#8221;</p><p>By midday, word had traveled quickly through Ricochet Hollow. Churches announced evening prayer services, and municipal buildings and several businesses lowered their flags to half-staff. Parents were seen gathering children early from neighborhood yards as the news spread.</p><p>Authorities have not released a cause of death. PEYTON:</strong> She&#8217;s&#8230; she was my daughter. She was my little girl.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Mr. Peyton, I know this is difficult, but I need you to answer clearly. Where were you on the afternoon of September 3rd between approximately 2:30 and 4:00 p.m.?</p><p><strong>MR. PEYTON:</strong> I was driving. Southbound. I was coming back from Columbus, Ohio with a load of appliance parts. I left Clavin around 6:00 that morning. You can check my driver logs. The body appeared to be <strong>intentionally weighted</strong>, with multiple rocks secured to the body using <strong>clear fishing line</strong>.</p><p>The position of the body and the manner in which the rocks were affixed did not appear consistent with accidental entry into the water.</p><p>The area was secured and access restricted.</p><p>Initial observation indicated <strong>foul play suspected</strong>.</p><p>The juvenile&#8217;s clothing was present but disarranged. No further examination was conducted on site pending forensic processing.</p><p>Emergency medical services were notified. The coroner was contacted and responded to the scene.</p><p>Photographs were taken. Evidence was documented and preserved. The body was recovered with assistance due to terrain conditions and transported for autopsy.</p><p>Weather conditions at time of discovery were clear. state your name and address?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Tilda Wilkes. One-twenty-three Hollow Bend. Been here near fifty years now. Caldwell and I moved here during the war. He&#8217;s gone now.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> I&#8217;m sorry to hear that.</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Thank you. You don&#8217;t ever really stop missing someone. He liked sitting out here on the porch. Said you could see most everything from this spot if you paid attention. He was always noticing who came through. That&#8217;s why I still sit out here. Habit, I suppose.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Do you usually sit out in the afternoons?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Most days, yes. If it&#8217;s not raining. I come out after lunch and stay until it&#8217;s time for my pills and my shows. I keep to a schedule. Makes the day simpler.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> About what time did you come out today?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Around twelve-fifteen. Maybe a little after. The noon news had just ended.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> And you went back inside when?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Just before three. I always do. Pills first, then my programs.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> While you were outside, did you notice anyone on Hollow Bend?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> It was quiet. The meter man came through earlier. Caleb Rourke passed by &#8212; heading toward Crystal&#8217;s, I expect. And Harlan Lester stepped out about the same time as the bus pulled up.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Anyone else?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> No, sir. Not that I recall. If someone had come by, I likely would&#8217;ve seen them. I sit right here most of the time.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Did you see Brittany today?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Oh yes. She always stops to say hello. Sweet child.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> What happened when you saw her?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> She got off the bus and came over like she always does. Told me about school &#8212; I don&#8217;t remember exactly what. We talked a minute or two. Nothing out of the ordinary.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> About how long did she stay?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> Just a few minutes. She knows better than to linger. She said goodbye and headed toward home.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Did you notice anything unusual about her?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> No. She seemed perfectly fine to me. Smiling. Same as always. If something had been wrong, I believe I&#8217;d have noticed.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Did you see her again after that?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> No. &#8230; No, I didn&#8217;t. I went back inside not long after.</p><div><hr></div><p><strong>PRITCHARD:</strong> Have you ever noticed anyone hanging around who doesn&#8217;t belong here?</p><p><strong>TILDA:</strong> No. This road&#8217;s the same people it&#8217;s always been. I don&#8217;t care much for Trent Wilburn &#8212; he&#8217;s loud sometimes &#8212; but that&#8217;s just my opinion.
