RICOCHET HOLLOW — Nearly six months after six-year-old Brittany Lynn was found dead in Coalwater Quarry, the Ricochet Hollow Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation into her death has been reclassified as inactive.

The announcement came quietly, without a press conference or public statement beyond a brief confirmation that no new leads have emerged. The case remains open, officials said, but no further investigative steps are planned unless additional information comes forward.

Brittany disappeared on September 3 after failing to return home from school. For days, her name echoed through the woods and along the creeks near Hollow Bend Road as neighbors, family members, and volunteers searched. When her body was found three days later at Coalwater Quarry, the shock rippled far beyond the small stretch of road where she lived.

In the weeks that followed, the town gathered, at churches, in school gyms, and along the roadside. Parents walked children to bus stops. Porches stayed lit late into the night. For a while, it felt like everyone was holding their breath at the same time.

For now, winter lingers over the hollow.

The flowers and stuffed animals left near the Lynn home have faded or been carried away by weather. The yellow ribbons tied to fence posts have thinned. Church services are smaller. The road is quiet again.

“It doesn’t feel over,” one neighbor said. “It just feels…unfinished.”

Authorities say deputies conducted interviews, reviewed tips, and followed every lead available to them. No arrests have been made.

“This case is not closed,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said. “But at this time, there is nothing further to pursue.”

For Brittany’s family, and for many in Ricochet Hollow, the words land heavily. The passing of time has brought routine back to the town, but not relief.

PURPOSE

This memorandum documents supervisory review of investigative actions taken in the matter of Brittany Lynn, following approximately three months of active investigation with no new leads.

SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATION

Since the initial report on September 3, 1993, the Ricochet Hollow Sheriff’s Office has undertaken the following actions:

• Immediate response and neighborhood canvass

• Search and rescue operations across multiple identified areas

• Recovery and forensic examination of the juvenile

• Review of tipline calls and follow-up where applicable

• Interviews with family members, neighbors, and persons of interest

• Verification of alibis where provided

• Coordination with the Ricochet County Medical Examiner

All investigative steps were conducted in accordance with departmental procedure.

FINDINGS

• No witness was able to place any suspect with the juvenile during the disappearance window.

• No physical evidence conclusively linked any individual to the crime.

• Multiple persons of interest were identified and interviewed; no actionable evidence developed.

• Tip line information consisted primarily of rumor, speculation, or unverifiable reports.

• All known leads have been pursued and exhausted.

ASSESSMENT

At this time, the investigation has yielded no additional avenues reasonably expected to produce new information. Continued active status has not resulted in further evidentiary development.

The case does not meet criteria for further immediate investigative allocation absent new information.

RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that Case RH–1993–731 be reclassified from Active Investigation to Inactive / Unsolved, pending receipt of new evidence, credible witness information, or forensic advancement.

At approximately 0830 hours, Shawn Cross presented in person at the Ricochet Hollow Sheriff’s Office to report the possible discovery of a body at the area commonly known as The Slip. Mr. Cross stated he had observed what appeared to be a juvenile hand near the waterline while fishing and departed the area without approaching the remains further.

The undersigned deputy accompanied Mr. Cross back to The Slip, arriving at approximately 1000 hours. Upon arrival, Mr. Cross proceeded on foot ahead of the deputy and directed the undersigned to the specific location where he stated the observation was made.

The area consists of a steep rock face descending to shallow water with large, irregular stones at the base. From an elevated vantage point identified by Mr. Cross, a portion of a juvenile hand was visible extending into the water between rocks. The remainder of the body was partially submerged and not immediately visible without closer approach.

Mr. Cross reiterated that he originally observed the hand from several feet away and did not descend to the waterline. Visual inspection of the immediate area did not reveal disturbance consistent with recent foot traffic beyond that of Mr. Cross accompanying the undersigned back to the scene.

Fishing equipment identified by Mr. Cross as his own was observed staged several yards from the drop area. [See evidence log: #005] No other personal items or debris were observed in the immediate vicinity. No other individuals were present at the time of arrival.

The scene was secured and access restricted pending recovery and further investigation.

The body was identified as Brittany Lynn by visual identification and confirmation by family.

CONDITION OF BODY

The body was received clothed and secured in an evidence body bag (see Evidence Log #001). Rigor mortis was present and consistent with a postmortem interval extending beyond 24 hours. Lividity was fixed and observed in dependent areas.

The body exhibited evidence of water exposure consistent with submersion following death.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATION

The body is that of a well-nourished juvenile female.

Multiple abrasions were observed on exposed areas of the extremities, consistent with contact with rocks or rough surfaces.

Examination of the neck revealed faint contusions and patterned discoloration, most prominent along the anterior and lateral aspects. No ligature furrow or patterned ligature marks were identified.

Ligature material consisting of clear monofilament fishing line was present, with associated rocks recovered and documented separately by law enforcement. The placement and configuration of the ligature material indicate postmortem application.

No defensive wounds were identified on the hands or forearms.

INTERNAL EXAMINATION

Internal examination of the neck structures revealed soft tissue hemorrhage in the anterior neck musculature, consistent with external compressive force.

Petechial hemorrhages were observed in the conjunctivae and facial tissues.

The hyoid bone and laryngeal cartilages were intact.

Examination of the lungs revealed no significant water aspiration, supporting death prior to submersion.

There was no evidence of significant natural disease or congenital abnormality.

ADDITIONAL FINDINGS

The examination revealed injuries and findings consistent with nonconsensual activity. Due to the age of the decedent, these findings are considered significant and non-accidental.

Biological samples were not present.

TOXICOLOGY

Toxicology screening was negative for alcohol and common controlled substances.

TIME OF DEATH

Based on postmortem changes, environmental exposure, and condition of the body, the estimated time of death is between the afternoon and evening hours of September 3, 1993.

A more precise determination is not possible.

CAUSE AND MANNER OF DEATH

Cause of Death:
Asphyxia due to manual strangulation.

Manner of Death:
Homicide.

COMMENTS

Findings indicate death occurred prior to submersion, with subsequent postmortem manipulation of the body.

The weighting of the body using fishing line and rocks is consistent with an attempt to impede discovery.

The findings are not consistent with accidental death or drowning.

RICOCHET COUNTY — The search for six-year-old Brittany Lynn came to a close on Labor Day when authorities confirmed that human remains were found in Coalwater Quarry, several miles north of her family’s home on Hollow Bend Road.

Deputies with the Ricochet Hollow Sheriff’s Office responded Monday morning to an access point known locally as The Slip, along the far eastern edge of the quarry. Authorities said a community member arrived at the Sheriff’s Office early that morning to report the discovery after being in the area. Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances.

Well known to generations of local residents, Coalwater Quarry has been closed since 1982. The site has seen little official use in the years since, though it remains a spot where fishermen cast their lines. In the warmer months, the western end of the quarry serves as an informal recreation area for local swimmers to cool off.

Throughout Labor Day weekend, neighbors and volunteers searched woods, fields, and creek banks closer to the Lynn home, holding onto hope that the first-grade student had wandered and might yet be found safe. Much of the organized search effort had been focused in the immediate area around Hollow Bend Road.

“This is a hard day for our town,” Sheriff Robert Hale said Monday. “We ask everyone to keep the Lynn family in their prayers and allow investigators the time they need.”

By midday, word had traveled quickly through Ricochet Hollow. Churches announced evening prayer services, and municipal buildings and several businesses lowered their flags to half-staff. Parents were seen gathering children early from neighborhood yards as the news spread.

Authorities have not released a cause of death. The investigation remains active, and additional information will be provided when confirmed.

MR. CROSS: I was fishing. Smallies. Decided to spend the holiday at the quarry. I go out there sometimes when it’s quiet.

MR. CROSS: Around six-fifteen. Maybe a little after. I parked and walked in.

PRITCHARD: Where did you go once you arrived?

MR. CROSS: I walked around the edge like I usually do. Took my time. I ended up over by The Slip ‘round seven-fifteen.

PRITCHARD: What happened then?

MR. CROSS: I was looking at the water and I saw something that didn’t look right. At first I thought it was trash or a log or something caught. Then I saw it was a hand. It was a hand in the water.

PRITCHARD: What did you do when you realized that?

MR. CROSS: I didn’t go no closer. I just stood there a second. Then I walked back out and drove here. And then I showed Abel where I found her. It’s her, ain’t it?

PRITCHARD: Did you touch anything or move anything at the scene?

MR. CROSS: No. I didn’t touch nothing. I didn’t want to mess anything up.

PRITCHARD: Had you seen anything unusual earlier that morning?

MR. CROSS: No. It was quiet. Just water and rocks. Nothing else.

PRITCHARD: Did you see anyone else in the area?

MR. CROSS: No, sir. I didn’t see no one.

PRITCHARD: Had you been to The Slip recently before today?

MR. CROSS: Oh, I guess I go there about every month. Good smallmouth.

PRITCHARD: Where were you on the afternoon of Friday, September 3rd?

MR. CROSS: I was at work like always.

PRITCHARD: And where do you work?

MR. CROSS: I work over at Maitlands. Been carrying hod over there while they build the new store. You can check.

MR. CROSS: I wish I hadn’t seen her. That’s all. It’s her, ain’t it? The little girl?

PRITCHARD: Did you speak to Brittany on September 3rd at any point?

MR. PEYTON: No. I talked to her the night before. Around 7:30. Crystal put her on the phone. She was talking about her spelling test. She said she knew all the words. She wanted me to test her. She spelled “because” three times to make sure she got it right. She was proud of that.

PRITCHARD: Did she mention anything unusual? Anyone bothering her? Anything that concerned you?

MR. PEYTON: No. Nothing like that. She sounded normal. Happy.

PRITCHARD: Were there any custody disputes between you and Ms. Lynn?

MR. PEYTON: No. We didn’t go to court. We worked it out ourselves.

PRITCHARD: Any disagreements recently? Financial disputes? Arguments about visitation?

MR. PEYTON: No. We argued like anyone does. But nothing that’d make somebody take a child. That’s not how we are.

At approximately 0834 hours on September 6, 1993, the undersigned deputy responded to a report by Ricochet Hollow resident Shawn Cross of a possible body located at The Slip, a steep quarry access point situated at the east end of Coalwater Quarry, Ricochet County, Kentucky.

Upon arrival, I observed the body of a juvenile female later identified as Brittany Lynn, age six, reported missing on September 3, 1993.

The body was located at the base of the The Slip, partially submerged and wedged between several large rocks along the waterline. The body appeared to be intentionally weighted, with multiple rocks secured to the body using clear fishing line.

The position of the body and the manner in which the rocks were affixed did not appear consistent with accidental entry into the water.

The area was secured and access restricted.

Initial observation indicated foul play suspected.

The juvenile’s clothing was present but disarranged. No further examination was conducted on site pending forensic processing.

Emergency medical services were notified. The coroner was contacted and responded to the scene.

Photographs were taken. Evidence was documented and preserved. The body was recovered with assistance due to terrain conditions and transported for autopsy.

Weather conditions at time of discovery were clear. Water levels were moderate.

No identifying personal effects were located separate from the body at the scene.
